Dutch company Hartog specialises in growing, processing and drying lucerne (alfalfa) & grass for animal feed. Two unique Claas Jaguar forage harvesters are used to gather in the crop. One of them features in this video, aptly named ‘doggy style’ because of its ability to crab steer across the field.
We follow a young crop of lucerne being mown using the companies Krone Big M 420. The lucerne is grown together with spring oats. This cereal grows vigorously and suppresses weeds in the new crop. After mowing it for the first time the lucerne can thrive and the oat stubble will die off. The crop will remain in production for 2 or 3 years.
The mower is followed some days later by a Fendt 412 Vario and an Italian build ROC RT 1000 belt merger. This 10m wide machine makes light work of gathering 3 swaths from the Krone.
Finally the special Claas Jaguar 960 comes in to chop the crop and blow it into containers. The articulated steering machine has been fitted with a hook lift trailer to quickly pick up and drop the containers, which lorries bring to the drying plant. A trip of 80km. The chopper was specially build for this company, which has a long history of running unique and bespoke machines. On the rear two Claas Terra Trac units are fitted. The front is a standard Jaguar 960 which was new in 2011.
